DRB II

Chrysler's DRB II diagnostic tool

Moddler

In this catergory of posts I will document all kinds of things regarding Chrysler’s legacy diagnostic systems.

The DRB II must have been released around 1988, since the Chrysler New Yorker used the CCD bus. The predecessor was the Miller C-4805. The successor is the DRB III.

I bought a DRB II for about 150$ three years ago and since then I have purchased a lot of accessories for it.

This is the DRB II. I believe there is another version with more 90s style colors to it. My model is the older version.

The actual program is fed into the bottom slot via a cartridge. The internal memory of the device seems to only hold a very small programm for showing text, without a cartridge the DRB will not operate.

On the top there is a port for what i believe is a voltage measuring port (red). On the right a mini-XLR port is located. This can be used to connect the DRB II to a Mopar Diagnostic System (MDS) via serial communication. I have not bothered figuring out if this port could be any use to me. The cable in the first picture shows the connector cable for different types of adapters, it is a bone stock 8-Pin DIN connector (female).

This is the inside of the DRB II. Notable is the non-chrysler branded CPU (contrary to ECUs, BCMs or TCMs). It simply is a Motorola MC68HC11A1FN. The other very interesting IC is the Harris 306846. This is the chip that converts the UART communication from the CPU to the CCD bus of the vehicle.

The display seems to be somewhat swappable. A guy at the Turbo Mopar Forum changed the display of his unit.

This is the back side. The device was obviously built by OTC, nowadays owned by Bosch. Why do those traces have 90 degrees angles?

This is the top part viewed from the inside. It seems the LM2940CT gets quite warm and measures against that have been taken. Note the spare brown wire from the DIN connector which is not connected to anything.

The left cartridge seems to be used only in combination with the Mopar Diagnostic System. The super cartridge V8.0 is the most “recent” model and covers up to model year 1994. The other cartridge probably was the most modern cartidge for that time. Maybe there were also differnt kinds of cartridges at the same time, which then could be stuck into a single super cartridge as memory size grew. I will bring up another post regarding all kinds of cartridges I collected. Some guys at turbo dodge found something quite interesting regarding development cartridges.

Booting up the DRB II with the level 2.05 cartridge outputs this message on the display. ` MAKE SELECTION USING DRBII KEYPAD OR MDS KEYBOARD (SEE MDS SCREEN)

This in the inside from the mopar diagnostic system Level 2.05 1992 cartridge. The other cartridges cannot be taken apart without destroying them. If anybody has an idea how to get the memory dumped from the EPROMs please let me know!

I removed the sticker covering the EPROM window for your viewing pleasure.
For whatever reason this cartridge has two 1.0F 5.5V capacitors.
